What makes a woman a woman? For the last five years, Crisol has explored the female form in all her aspects: girl, lover, mother, and woman. "In the Beginning was the Ovum" marks the artist's first attempt to explore this territory from the inside out. Drawing on her background as a molecular biologist, this new series endeavors to make sense of the processes all women go through at the cellular level. From the extremes of the 28-day uterine cycle, to representations of ovary cells, Crisol incorporates images from the laboratory onto the canvas in subtle and surprising ways. Crisol looks beyond the mirror and into the microscope to reveal the mystery and majesty of Venus.
